Mississippi Rural Health Day

Mississippi is among the most rural states in the nation, with more than half of our residents living outside urban areas. Rural communities depend on a network of dedicated Critical Access Hospitals, Rural Emergency Hospitals, and Rural Health Clinics that provide essential care close to home. These facilities play a vital role in improving health outcomes, supporting local economies, and ensuring that Mississippians—no matter where they live—can access high-quality healthcare.

Rural healthcare in Mississippi continues to evolve through innovation, workforce development, and strategic partnerships. From expanding medical training programs that prepare more providers to serve rural communities, to strengthening telehealth and emergency care, Mississippi has made meaningful progress in addressing both access and quality challenges. Rural hospitals and clinics have also benefited from federal and state investments that help stabilize operations and support community health initiatives.

Mississippi Rural Health Day celebrates the individuals and organizations who make rural healthcare possible—nurses, physicians, therapists, administrators, community health workers, and many others. It is a day to recognize their dedication, highlight the unique needs of rural communities, and continue advocating for strong, sustainable rural health systems. Each November 20th, we honor the impact of these professionals and reaffirm the importance of expanding high-quality care across every corner of Mississippi.
