The Mississippi Rural Health Association, in partnership with the Wal-Mart Foundation and the Mississippi State Department of Health, Office of Preventative Health, promotes diabetes awareness throughout the State of Mississippi. The first two phases of this project dealt with outreach and direct interaction with Mississippi citizens in order to perform pre-screenings for diabetes. Those that were of the “risk” category of pre-screening were directed to a local medical home in order to be tested for diabetes and receive appropriate treatment.
The Association also serves as the administrative agent for the Mississippi Diabetes Coalition, the leader in diabetes education and prevention in the state.
Association staff member Kate Cooley serves as the director of the diabetes coalition.
More information on the coalition may be found on their website at www.diabetescoalition-ms.org.
